Job Info

The Department of English at Colby College invites applications for a two-year visiting appointment in pre-1900 Global Anglophone literature, with an emphasis in poetry, to begin fall 2025. For this position we seek a scholar with demonstrated teaching excellence and a relevant research agenda to deepen our offerings in Global Anglophone literature and poetics. We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages the environmental humanities or theories of empire and colonialism. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the area of specialty, core requirements for majors, and one writing-intensive course for first-year students annually. PhD must be in hand no later than August 2025.

Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and close student-faculty interaction. We seek candidates who, through their scholarship, teaching and service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the campus community. The English Department at Colby is unusual among liberal arts colleges in offering majors in English, in English with a concentration in Literature and the Environment, and in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Many students from across campus also minor in English or in Creative Writing. We support a lively array of lectures, faculty work-in-progress seminars, and readings, and we foster both student and faculty research through grants and off-campus opportunities.

To apply, please submit applications through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/157593. Include cover letter, CV, contact information for three confidential references, a statement of teaching philosophy and research interests that demonstrates a commitment to equitable and inclusive teaching and a writing sample of no more than 25 pages. Review of materials will begin on December 5 and continue until the position is filled. We will contact candidates in January to schedule initial interviews in early February, and invite finalists to campus in March. For further information, contact Professor Megan Cook, Department of English, chair of the search committee (megan.cook@colby.edu).

Colby is a private, coeducational liberal arts college that admits students and makes personnel decisions on the basis of the individual's qualifications to contribute to Colby's educational objectives and institutional needs. The principle of not discriminating on the basis of race, color, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, caste, national or ethnic origin, marital status, genetic information, political beliefs, veteran or military status, parental status, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, physical or mental disability unrelated to the job or course of study requirements is consistent with the mission of a liberal arts college and the law.
