·Working toward a B.S. in geology with interest in petrography and the production of rock thin section.·Experience in identification of rocks and minerals in both hand sample and thin section.·Must have taken and passed Optical Mineralogy lecture and lab classes.·No related work experience required.·Must enjoy some physical labor and be organized.

Primary Responsibilities:

Purpose of Job:
Production of rock thin sections using the equipment in WSB 116, the Geology program's "rock room". Intern will make thin sections from rocks provided by Geology faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use the saws, polishers, and thin section equipment in WSB 116 to cut rocks into slabs and billets; mount billets on glass slides; and grind billets to the required thickness for optical petrography
  • Use optical petrography skills to ensure each produced thin section has achieved the right thickness.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all equipment used in these processes
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.

Supervision: Direct supervision from Dr. Jesse Kelsch for day to day instruction. Dr. Kelsch will also act as the Faculty Mentor within the STEM Internship Program.
STEM Internship Program:This position is part of the Title III STEM Lobotrack to Success (LTS) Supplemental Instructor Program. Along with the normal job duties, the student will learn from the faculty supervisor about the STEM workforce, different career pathways, research, and more.
