Job Summary
To troubleshoot, repair, and install all temperature control systems on campus and perform routine maintenance as assigned. Cooperates with fellow members of Systems and Controls team, members of F&S members and customers. Work assignments and instructions may be by written work orders or verbal instructions from the direct supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, troubleshoots and repair temperature control systems, ranging from systems in older campus buildings to newer technology. Performs periodic maintenance on all temperature control systems and air compressors.
  • Installs controls on new construction projects.
  • Proactive in identifying and bringing forward energy conservation items and practices.
  • Perform record keeping for systems installed or maintained. Including documentation to be entered into AIM.
  • Assists engineering staff as directed. Documents deficiencies in existing systems. Assists in prioritizing the needed corrective work. Assists in developing project scope and budget.
  • Assists in the system analysis to determine the most appropriate corrective work of existing systems to correct maintenance and operational deficiencies. Our goals are to improve space conditions, provide preventive maintenance and promote energy conservation.

    A. Complexity This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily.
    B. Scope and Effect The workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.

    ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
    A. Physical Requirements
    • Could require climbing ladders, working around all types of mechanical equipment (moving parts), and working from platforms.
    • Could require considerable amount of walking, climbing and making repairs in tight spaces.
    • Usually requires manual dexterity.
    B. Work Environment
    • Work is generally in classrooms, labs, equipment rooms, vaults and sometimes steam tunnels. Environment contains heat, cold, dust, noise, and toxic chemicals.

    • Bilateral Pulling - Occasional - 100lbs of force to tilt 55-gallon drums with hands at 40"
    • Unilateral Above Shoulder Pushing - Occasional - 97lb force with 18" wrench to loosen pipe fitting
    • Bilateral Lifting - Occasional - 70lbs for 24" x 36" x 8" Control Panel, from floor to waist level
    • Bilateral Lift/Carry - Occasional - 70lb Control Panel, up to 50 stairs, 32lb tool backpack with shoulder carry, up to 300ft.
    • Unilateral Carry - 44lbs for 5 gallon oil bucket, from 20" height, up to 100ft
    • Based on the two-hand occasional lifting of up to 70lbs, the occasional two-hand pulling of 100lbs, and the occasional unilateral pushing of 97lbs, the Temperature Control Mechanic functions at the Very-Heavy Physical Demand Level.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Certificate of completion of a pipe trades apprenticeship under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program that included one (1) year (12 months) of experience in the area of pneumatic, mechanical, and/or direct digital control systems.
      OR
    • Acceptance as a journeyman Temperature Control Mechanic by the local pipe trades industry as a result of having passed the examination used generally in the area AND five (5) years (60 months) of experience in the trade* , including apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training, that included one (1) year (12 months) of experience in the area of pneumatic, mechanical, and/or direct digital control systems.
      OR
    • Five (5) years (60 months) of work experience in pneumatic, mechanical, and/or direct digital control systems.
    *The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by plumbers, pipefitters, pipefitter welders, refrigeration mechanics, temperature control mechanics, oil burner mechanics, and lead burners.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Basic math skills.
    • Ability to interpret diagrams and control blueprints.
    • Thorough knowledge of temperature control systems including pneumatic, mechanical, and direct digital.
    • Skill in the use of hand tools.
    • Journeyman level skills in pipefitting.
    • Ability to communicate in order to assist and train apprentices.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Working knowledge of safety procedures.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2640 - Temperature Control Mechanic position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is based on the prevailing wage, which is currently $52.65/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
