Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government is the nation's preeminent university-based hub for training, consulting, and impactful scholarship aimed at local and state government. Since 1931, the School's mission has been to improve the lives of North Carolinians through practical scholarship that empowers citizens and public officials to understand and enhance state and local government.

Each year the School offers over 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences tailored to cater to the diverse needs of more than 12,000 public officials, helping them navigate the complexities of public service.

In addition to our renowned training programs, the School operates a nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program, available both on campus and online. We cultivate the next generation of public servants, equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for impactful governance.
The School also supports a wide variety of entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives aimed at topics including public leadership, criminal justice, technology, environmental finance, and community development. Position Summary:

The School of Government is seeking a Teaching Assistant Professor to specialize in civil procedure, civil trials, and contested hearings. The faculty member will be the School's point person on civil procedure issues for the State's superior court judges. As a teaching assistant professor, this faculty member will advise and teach superior court judges as well as district court judges, clerks of superior court, magistrates, and sheriffs. The person's areas of expertise will include the North Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure, court-ordered attorney fees, drafting orders, and pre- and post-judgment civil proceedings. Working in collaboration with colleagues, this faculty member will create, administer, and provide instruction in courses offered through the North Carolina Judicial College (such as Advanced Civil Procedure for Superior Court Judges, Civil District Court, and Decision-Making) and teach in orientation programs and conferences offered through the School's partnership with the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts.

This will be a variable track position, with the possibility of converting from fixed-term to tenure-track pursuant to the School's policies on appointment, promotion, and tenure.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

JD, strong academic performance, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Three years of experience in civil law preferred.

The writing sample should demonstrate your ability to engage in in-depth legal analysis. A formal published article in a Bar journal or law review is not required. Common examples include appellate briefs and legal memorandum. The writing sample does not have to address topics that fall within the areas of expertise described in the position description. We recommend the writing sample be written within the last four years.
