Role description:

The Senior Glass Technology Engineer assists in the creation of glass formulas for Ardagh Glass Packaging North America's twenty-nine furnaces. This role supports the plants on glass and raw material quality troubleshooting. This position also assists in raw material selection, monitoring, and audits. The Senior Glass Technology Engineer maintains databases of formulas, tests glass, and raw materials, and issues report to all levels within the organization. Senior Glass Technology Engineer works in a cross-functional team to develop new technical capabilities for Ardagh Glass Packaging North America.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and issue cullet, color, and oxide changes as needed
  • Provide on-site and remote plant support for all glass-related elements including composition, forming characteristics, color, and defects analysis
  • Coordinate glass-related elements between furnace environmental compliance, glass and batch composition, and furnace operations
  • Respond to informational requests, solve specific glass quality problems or operational problems, and supports development and implementation of trainings for plant personnel
  • Maintain a reporting system for calculating glass formulas, cost savings, glass quality improvement, and color changes
  • Manage and maintain raw material and glass testing reports
  • Conduct defect source analysis and communicate issues with vendors, analytical laboratories, plants, and corporate management
  • Technically lead the development of solutions and new capabilities
  • Develop and maintain database of Glass Technology SOPs, audits and troubleshooting guides for manufacturing plants
  • Provide technical support and guidance during interaction with customers on glass-related issues
  • Present on technical topics to senior leadership, scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Special projects as assigned

Minimum skills / qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other technical-related disciplines
  • Five (5) years of technical experience in the glass container manufacturing industry
  • Ability to be on-call 24/7
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques e.g., XRF, microscopy, SEM/EDS, UV/VIS spectroscopy, XRD
  • Experience with identification, measurement, and quantitative description of common glass defects e.g., stones, seeds/blisters, cord
  • Prior exposure to PowerBI
  • Must be able to travel up to 50%
  • Demonstrate the ability to define and meet key project milestones
  • Work with broad guidance

Preferred skills / qualifications:
  • Eight years of technical experience in the glass container manufacturing industry
  • Prior experience working in a glass manufacturing plant
  • Prior experience in statistical analysis
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and tools and ability to complete projects on time and within budget
