Job Description: Shop Mechanic

We are looking for an experienced and skilled Shop Mechanic to join our team. The Shop Mechanic is responsible for performing general mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of a diverse range of automotive and construction/asphalt equipment. This role involves repairing and servicing vehicles and other motorized equipment in the field. The Shop Mechanic will actively participate in maintaining a safety-focused work environment and ensure compliance with local laws, regulations, and company policies. They will demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and repairing various mechanical components, while also maintaining cleanliness in the work area and personal tools.

Key Duties:

  • Safety Focus:
  • Actively participate in promoting a Safety-First culture.
  • Identify and report near-miss incidents promptly.
  • Speak up when observing unsafe acts.
  • Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with all local laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Understand and adhere to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations relevant to mechanic truck operation.
  • Successfully passed certified basic mechanic skills testing.
  • Maintenance and Repairs:
  • Perform routine and advanced maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct DOT brake repairs on commercial vehicles.
  • Repair powertrain components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, PTO systems, transfer cases, hydraulic motors and pumps, and auxiliary drive components.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot starting and charging systems.
  • Diagnose suspension system problems, such as vehicle alignment, springs, and chassis mounting systems.
  • Troubleshoot electrical components, including gauges, sending units, relays, lighting systems, and solenoids.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace track suspension systems and components, such as rails, bushings, idlers, sprocket segments, rollers, and track shoes.
  • Perform expert repairs on material handling equipment, such as cranes and forklifts.
  • General Maintenance:
  • Maintain a clean work area, including sweeping floors and removing oil and grease spills.
  • Perform general custodial work as required.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain personal tools and company-owned tools.
  • Accurately complete all associated forms, such as inspection records, time sheets, and work orders.
  • Teamwork and Goals:
  • Demonstrate a team attitude and work towards individual, division, and company goals.
Qualification Requirements:
  • Education and Experience:
    • Previous experience as a Field Mechanic, demonstrating sufficient knowledge and skills.
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
    • Ability to understand work directions and effectively communicate with management, fellow employees, and others.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
    • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record required.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Ability to stand for extended periods, stoop, bend, and crouch as necessary to perform duties.
    • Use hands overhead frequently, often in conjunction with the operation of hand power tools.
    • Ability to lift and carry weights of up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 90 pounds.
    • Manual dexterity for handling generators, lumber, construction materials, power tools, and hand tools.
    • Physical agility and flexibility for stretching, proper leg placement, and repetitive arm and hand motions.
    • Ability to maintain constant alertness in a construction site environment, including awareness of other employees, contractors, stationary equipment, and mobile equipment.
    • Safe climbing on and off heavy mobile equipment.
    • Walking on uneven surfaces, including natural ground, in various weather conditions.
    • Capability to be certified to enter confined spaces, climb into and out of excavations up to 15 feet deep using ladders or crawling.
    • Sufficient visual acuity and skill under different light, darkness
The posted salary or pay compensation ranges are approximate and dependent on applicable experience and qualifications. Upper ranges are flexible.
