Job Description Summary
The Senior Director of the Marks Family Center for Excellence in Writing is responsible for collaboratively developing, implementing and sustaining the vision, philosophy, and curriculum of the Critical Writing Program and Marks Family Writing Center. In doing so, the Senior Director maintains high standards in teaching, advising, tutoring, and administration of the program and its recruitment and mentoring of administrative, instructional, and tutoring staff. The Senior Director also serves as the champion of writing in the first year and an ambassador to departments, programs, and other schools across Penn's campus.

The Marks Family Center for Excellence in Writing strengthens the university's deep commitment to developing and refining the critical thinking, writing, and collaborative skills of our undergraduate students. Dedicated to teaching writing and to creating a community of writers across Penn's undergraduate schools, it brings together a uniquely discipline-based writing curriculum, dynamic workshops, symposia, student-centered projects and publications, and distinguished faculty.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Director of the Marks Family Center for Excellence in Writing provides leadership and management of the Critical Writing Program, responsible for an array of programs, services and support for Penn undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. The Senior Director also co-manages the Critical Writing staff and faculty who administer or teach in the writing seminars and the Marks Family Writing Center, who organize tutoring, mentor tutors, and provide writing support to undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty across the university.
The Senior Director collaborates with faculty and staff across the university to deliver a rigorous writing curriculum and provide writing opportunities and support for students, faculty, and staff across disciplines and schools, attending specifically to their needs as well as to best practices and current research in writing studies.
The Senior Director also oversees the core financial and enrollment operations of the Critical Writing Program. As a crucial staff member of the Critical Writing Committee, the Senior Director cultivates strong links with faculty across the university and with other programs at Penn, and works closely with the academic directors, advisors, and undergraduate deans of Penn's four undergraduate schools; as well as an array of Penn administrative, student support, and student organizations, including Penn First Plus, Wellness (including Student Health and Counseling), the library, the College's Committee on Undergraduate Education, student advisory boards from the four undergraduate schools, Civic House, the Netter Center, Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Innovation; as well as SAS Computing, the Associate Provost for University Life, the Penn Transfer Student Organization. The Senior Director will be responsible for developing a strategic plan that evaluates the core writing curriculum, the efficacy of the shared curriculum and tutoring offerings, the writing in the disciplines initiative, and the potential for graduate writing tutoring to be housed within the Marks Center. Responsibilities also include teaching one core or elective course in the writing program each year.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric or a closely related field with demonstrated knowledge of writing center theories, pedagogy, and practice. 5-7 years experience managing, directing, working, and/or teaching in a writing center or equivalent center required. Experience with writing program administration is preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills; strong communicator; collaborative orientation with ability to manage and organize people and projects. Ability to work occasionally in the evenings or on weekends, and to travel on occasion to conferences.
