Job Summary

The Senior Director of Development, International Advancement will provide strategic leadership to establish and execute a pipeline strategy from monthly and annual giving to principal giving that contributes to the growth in advancement for international and globally engaged alumni. This strategy will drive their own individual portfolio in seamless collaboration with the office of Kelley Global and the Office of Development and Engagement. This position will build on prior progress to globalize advancement at the Kelley School of Business and support the Executive Director of Kelley Global as needed with the management of the Global Dean's Council (GDC) and work closely with the Dean, and Executive Director of Development and Engagement, to determine goals and initiatives in support of Kelley's global mission.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports the Executive Director of Kelley Global and their portfolio through writing proposals and moves management, particularly from solicitation to closure of gifts.
  • Collaborates, when appropriate, with the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs, the IU Foundation and university partners to steward and cultivate international Kelley alumni and donors toward overall university goals.
  • Serves as part of a team of development professionals, alumni relations professionals, and supporting staff members.
  • Plays a key role in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts to fund the school's fundraising priorities.
  • Plans and participates in solicitation efforts for major, planned, and/or principal gifts from alumni, parents, friends, and other constituents and supporters of the university. Solicitation efforts are primarily in person through meaningful contact, but may vary to include email, direct mail, social media, and phone communications.
  • Cultivates donor relationships through regular communications and outreach events; updates, maintains, and forwards prospective and current donor files and information to other development officers as necessary.
  • Regularly solicits and closes gifts of various sizes with the goal of increasing gifts of $25,000 - $1,000,000.
  • Sets annual funds targets, contacts, and timelines by campaign for self; may participate in goal-setting for lower-level development staff, as well; tracks progress toward goals, reports or presents figures on a regular basis to manager, team, and/or department/school representatives; progress may be monitored via an incentive plan.
  • Creates and distributes compelling print and digital fundraising materials for each campaign; tracks cost, funds received, and metrics such as return on investment for solicitation and pledge to donation yield.
  • Researches, compiles, and provides metrics, facts, and general operations information about IU and its schools and departments to donors.
  • Regularly collaborates with colleagues in relevant departments and schools and conveys donor questions/concerns related to their willingness to contribute.
  • Provides an excellent donor experience through customer service, active listening, inclusive language, and thoughtful and persuasive discussion, consistently upholding the integrity and mission of Indiana University.
  • Regularly takes on complex special projects, such as re-engaging lapsed donors, performing outreach to engage donors in volunteer leadership opportunities, or developing and executing targeted events for potential donors.
  • May participate in committees or strategy teams with department, school, campus, and/or Indiana University Foundation representatives and assist with setting short- and long-term annual giving strategy.
  • May delegate administrative tasks, such as preparing and sending digital and direct mail solicitations and closing communications, to other staff.

  • Identifies potential opportunities and cultivates relationships engaging with relevant stakeholders to develop project scope.
  • Develops deep understanding of related issues, assets, and opportunities to formulate project outcomes in collaboration with unit leadership and partners.
  • Stays currents on emerging needs and works closely with leadership to improve operational efficiency based on industry trends.
  • Matches identified needs with university academic and operational experts as well as external assets and resources.
  • Manages budgets, takes on special projects, and may supervise staff in project operations.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact on project needs and priorities interacting with diverse constituencies.
  • Develops and maintains systems for selecting, tracking, and assessing projects and their outcomes and impact.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Institutional Advancement Consultants.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

4-6 months of international travel a year.
