Summary:

The Patient Blood Management (PBM) Program Manager has expertise in PBM delivery, evidence-based clinical transfusion practices, and transfusion safety. Applies culture change and improvement principles to the processes surrounding PBM. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and administrators to improve patient outcomes by optimizing blood product usage and PBM, enhancing safety and reducing costs.

Responsibilities:

Integrates PBM data and domain expertise to clinical decision support. Analyzes EHR workflows, recommends improvements, and supports implementation. Collaborates with other departments such as Compliance, Accreditation, and others to ensure smooth transitions.Assists with planning educational symposiums on high impact PBM topics including patient pretransfusion specimen collection, bedside blood administration, medical decisions to transfuse, preventing and managing transfusion reactions, and minimizing blood wastage. Develops and maintains a resource library for blood transfusion and educational material.Monitors transfusion product utilization and brings utilization issues to the attention of the Transfusion Medicine Pathologist(s) and PBM Committee Chair. Conducts prospective and retrospective audits on the utilization of blood products and their alternatives. Identifies and investigates any trends related to transfusion practices.Serves as a resource for nurses, clinicians, and laboratory staff for issues related to PBM, Transfusion Medicine issues, and transfusion safety. Develops and delivers PBM curriculum.Identifies PBM improvement opportunities and leads PBM quality improvement projects and establishes and implements policies, processes, and procedures to support PBM that meet or exceed published standards.Monitors PBM program performance, established metrics, and applicable cost savings. Compiles a report of PBM program performance to share with health system leadership and applicable committees.Works with the PBM Chair, Transfusion Medicine Pathologist(s), Blood Bank leadership and Administration to develop annual goals for the PBM program. Maintains effective communication and coordination with all disciplines that interface with PBM and transfusion activities.

Education and Certification Requirements:

Bachelors: Nursing (Required)Registered Nurse Compact License (RN LICENSE COMPACT) - Compact RN Multistate, Registered Nurse License (RN LICENSE) - State of Florida (FL)

Complexity of Work: Solid computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications. Knowledge of compliance and regulatory processes specific to transfusion medicine. Knowledge of quality improvement processes. Advanced knowledge of transfusion practices. Demonstrated understanding of quality and safety improvement principles. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills and ability to develop positive working relationships with a broad range of professional disciplines. Ability to negotiate and resolve problems in a collaborative or independent manner. Requires critical thinking skills, effective communication skills (written and verbal), decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Required Work Experience: Six (6) years' experience as an ICU nurse transfusing blood products.
