Job Purpose

The AkzoNobel Huron site produces an assortment of resin technologies, including acrylics, latexes, polyesters, alkyds, and epoxies. These resins are synthesized in reactors. The resin plant operator is responsible for operating the resin reactors on site to a predetermined schedule. Nearly all production on site flows through the resin operators.

Key Responsibilities

Key Objectives/Principle Accountabilities
• Retrieving and staging raw materials for production. Must be able to identify items, comprehend labels and accurately document transactions.
• Handling of bagged materials, drums, and totes.
• Handling of solvent and oil-based materials, including hazardous materials.
• Taking and testing in-process sampling.
• Record keeping and collecting organize, accurate data in logbooks.
• Maintaining clean equipment and work areas
• Monitoring equipment health and requesting maintenance support where required.
• Directing Assistant Operators as necessary to support production
• Working safely within a Process Safety Managed (PSM) chemical production facility
• Contributing to hazard studies, PSSRs, MOCs, and safety focus teams.

Duties and Responsibilities Related to Hazardous Waste Management
• Responsible for the proper collection of hazardous waste
• Responsible for the proper marking, labelling and closure of hazardous waste containers.
• Responsible for immediate notification of appropriate personnel in discovering or causing a leak or spill.

Duties and Responsibilities Related to Department of Transportation Requirements
• Responsible for the proper filling, closing, marking, and labelling of bulk and non-bulk containers while following all applicable DOT requirements.
• Responsible for the proper loading and unloading of bulk containers, including tank trucks and railcars, while following all applicable DOT requirements.
• Responsible for the proper closing, marking, and labelling of tank trucks and railcars while following all applicable DOT requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities Related to Process Safety Management (PSM)
• Following all PSM related policies, procedures, and work instructions
• Following all Emergency Action Plans
• Participation in process and batch improvement activities
• Participation in Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) determination and completion
• Participation in Management of Change (MOC), Incident Investigation, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Pre-Start-up Safety Review (PSSR) and other safety related committees and teams

Job Requirements

• Possess a basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical processes.
• Ability to read, interpret, and make decisions in regard to trends, graphs, and charts.
• Understand and be able to perform basic functions of Lab Equipment.
• Familiarity and aptitude with the use of general mechanic's tools.
• Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office with the ability to collect and record data.
• Reading and comprehension skills to follow detailed instructions and batch slips
• Mathematics skill including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and the ability to measure weights and volumes (standard and metric).
• Able to perform frequent and repetitive lifting of materials weighing up to 55 pounds.
• Ability to bend, reach & lift hoses, manipulate valves, operation/adjustment of equipment, stacking pallets, climb ladders and stairs, and other related tasks.
• Ability to work from heights up to 20-50 feet.
• Ability to use and function with PPE including respirators, safety glasses, face shields, dust masks, etc.
• Ability to operate material handling equipment including but not limited to forklifts, forklift attachments, hoists, and pumps.
• Ability to perform multiple duties and manage complex tasks in a properly prioritized manner and through effective use of time management and working safely.
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work in a team environment, take area ownership, and perform with limited direction.
