The mission of the SMU Health Service is to provide quality, caring, cost effective and convenient ambulatory healthcare and health education services in association with other university departments that promote healthy lifestyles and enhance academic productivity leading to satisfying and rewarding college experiences.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

This position performs duties to support the daily operation of the Pharmacy in the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center on the SMU campus. The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in tasks associated with patient care, which includes preparing and delivering pharmaceuticals and related items, processing insurance, entering prescriptions and inputting data, helping manage inventory and providing all aspects of customer service required to support Pharmacy services. Maintains appropriate confidentiality of patient information and compliance with HIPAA standards. This position completes the essential functions of the job under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides quality customer service. Answers the phone and greets customers at the counter. Receives prescription requests from patients and doctors' offices and accepts payments for prescriptions.
  • Assists the pharmacist with the dispensing of items ordered by a physician pursuant to a valid prescription by helping package, fill, label, price, and deliver prescriptions. Documents all activities appropriately, which includes entering prescriptions, completing reports, inputting computer data and establishing and maintaining patient records.
  • Assists with management of the pharmacy inventory; places inventory orders, logs in new inventories. Responsible for helping oversee the Pharmacy retail area, receiving and inspecting merchandise, stocking and organizing shelves, guiding customers, and keeping track of inventories. Takes part in the two mandatory physical inventory audits performed each year.
  • Processes insurance claims (including rejections) in a proficient manner.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A High school diploma or equivalent is required.

A minimum of one year of pharmacy work experience is required.

National PTCB certification is required and must be in good standing with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.

Candidate must have familiarity with pharmacy operating systems.
