Job Summary

As a Fleet Inspection Engineering (FIE) Non-Destructive Evaluation Engineer at BPMI, you will perform moderately complex technical functions to support company operations in areas including, but not limited to performing engineering evaluations and analyses using nondestructive evaluation methods and making engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, modeling, developing, documenting, and qualifying nondestructive evaluation techniques for naval nuclear hardware. Work may include use of modeling, use of advanced nondestructive evaluation instruments, hardware, and software, design reviews, engineering software development, performance of shipboard inspections, analysis of inspection results, and resolution of technical problems.

This position requires knowledge and application of engineering techniques, principles and practices employed in the area of assignment. You will be responsible for maintaining the technical excellence of the Company within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Employees in the FIE section are required to undergo vision testing annually.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop technical knowledge and skills in nondestructive testing (NDT) methods and applications by pursuing training and qualification in appropriate methods and techniques.
  • Develop and apply NDT techniques to support technical evaluations and problem resolutions.
  • Participate in NDT inspection development or feasibility projects involving BPMI, NNL, shipyards, suppliers and NAVSEA to develop and apply NDT inspection methods, techniques and procedures for specific applications.
  • Participate in laboratory, manufacturing, and in-service inspections utilizing the various NDT techniques to support technical evaluations and problem resolutions.
  • Develop an understanding of component and system interrelationships.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports or procedures in accordance with NR program quality standards.
  • Complete training and work assignments that are planned to provide experience and familiarization with the engineering methods and practices of the Company.
  • Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions or obtaining approval of funding.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience. An advanced degree may be considered in lieu of some year(s) of experience.
  • A relevant Associate's degree may be considered with a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Experience with NDT methods - primarily ultrasonic testing, but also including liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, or radiography.
  • Experience in solid modeling using CAD software.
  • Experience with mechanical systems.
  • Ability to climb ladders or traverse steep staircases.
  • Ability to travel to field inspection sights via air for extended durations (generally 1-3 weeks).
  • Willingness to work in ambient temperatures (hot or cold).
  • Willingness to work in tight spaces for 8+ hours.
  • Willingness to work in an industrial setting.
