Job Summary
Manuscript Editor I: Edit complex scholarly journal manuscripts in the fields of science and economics for style, grammar, and accuracy under supervision of senior members of the department. Edit on-screen using XML-based editing software (including checking and entering necessary tagging) to create both online and print editions of academic journals; edit figure captions, tables, and math; query authors and communicate with them as necessary and appropriate at various stages during the editorial process; review proofs returned from authors; check typesetting and enter corrections in PDF proofs using Adobe Acrobat annotation tools; check and approve final articles to be printed and posted online ahead of print.
Work with editing colleagues and various departments within the Press. Contact journal office personnel, production controllers, publishing technology staff, authors, or others about problems that might be encountered in the editing process, if necessary.
Responsibilities
- Copyedit academic journal articles in science and economics following tight production schedules and deadlines.
- Copyedit all parts of a manuscript, including not only the main text, literature cited, and any appendixes but also figure captions, complex tables, and extensive math expressions and equations.
- Guide manuscripts through all publication stages and ensure high-level quality control.
- Review author proofs, enter and check corrections, and approve final files for publication.
- Identify and tactfully solve unique editorial situations with authors, journal office staff, and/or supervisors.
- Communicate extensively with authors, managing editors, and colleagues, including editorial supervisors and production staff.
- Collaborates with authors to resolve routine problems using existing procedures and to clarify meaning. Assists with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts.
- Checks typeset proofs before author review. May review typeset proofs or revised written copy returned by authors and approves or rejects changes.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Certifications:---Preferred QualificationsEducation:Experience:- A minimum of two years of prior publishing experience in copyediting or proofreading, preferably in scholarly journals or books rather than newspapers or magazines.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:- Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, XML-based editing, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat strongly.
