Position Purpose:

Leads and oversees the design, fabrication, instruction, consultation, and repair of scientific equipment and instruments for the Apparatus Shop. Coordinates and personally participates in these activities while providing strategic direction and advanced technical guidance. Manages and mentors shop employees, ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources. Provides expert-level support and training to individuals using shop equipment, including milling machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders, and welding equipment. Ensures the highest standards of safety, precision, and quality in all shop operations.

Description:

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Associates or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

· Associate's Degree in relevant field, or the equivalent.· Eight years relevant work experience.· Experience in design, assembly and operation of mechanical systems.· Practical knowledge of metallurgy.· Skill in the use of Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Machinery.· Ability to set-up and run machining operations.· Ability to independently design and fabricate scientific instrumentation.· Ability to collaborate with faculty and students.· Training experience in a machine shop setting.

Description:

Apparatus Design and Planning:- Provides design service, problem-solving, and mechanical consultation.- Utilizes CAD and CAM systems for engineering, performance requirements and fabrication of scientific equipment needed by research faculty.- Works from rough sketches, stated performance requirements, and verbal consultation to develop, refine, and finalize designs.

Description:

Apparatus Fabrication and Repair:- Selects materials (stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze, steel, mild steel, heat treatable steel, acrylics, Delrin, Teflon, PVC, nylon, etc.) for and fabricates scientific apparatus and equipment.- Performs associated soldering and welding.- Maintains tolerances down to .0005, modifying standard machining techniques and/or tools as necessary to achieve quality given cost and deadline considerations.- Modifies and repairs existing research equipment to meet changing performance requirements.- Fabricates parts no longer available on the open market.

Description:

Faculty Support:- Instructs faculty and students in safe and proper working procedures with shop tools and facilities.- Advises faculty and students on fabrication approaches and problem-solving.- Provides technical consultation on the design and fabrication of equipment.- Determines when requested work or phases thereof must be performed outside of the shop and selects qualified vendors.

Description:

Shop Safety & Instruction:- Performs hand-on instruction for groups of students in the basics of machining equipment operation and safety.- Provides individualized instruction in specific machining operations to faculty and students.- Provides supervision and direction to all non-shop personnel using shop equipment and facilities.- Establishes and ensures compliance with safety rules governing shop operations.- Handles hazardous materials appropriately.

Description:

Administration:- Administers shop budget.- Consults with Shop Committee and A&S Fiscal Office on annual rate setting process.- Prepares bills for services rendered by the shop and submits billing instructions including chart strings and descriptions of work completed to A&S Fiscal Office for processing.- Processes invoices for payment through the A&S Fiscal Office.- Determines supply needs and initiates procurement action.- Provides supervision to other shop employees.- Provides estimates for proposed work.- Maintains shop records.
