The anticipated shift is based on the operational needs and can change at any time, with notice.This position within the Division of Thoracic Surgery will support translational research and quality assurance activities within the division. Two major areas of research within the Division - tumor biology work and respiratory muscle work - depend largely upon the acquisition of tissue and blood specimens from the operating room. Furthermore, correlative studies and quality assurance activities utilizing information learned from analysis of these tissues in the laboratory and clinical information requires a robust Thoracic Surgery Clinical Database.This position is for an individual who will split his/her time between collecting/organizing tissue specimens in the operating room and collecting/entering/retrieving patient data for the clinical database and for ongoing and new clinical research studies. Tissue collected from the OR will need to be prepared (eg, snap-frozen or placed into preservative solutions), apportioned, labeled, and transported to the various laboratories. Demographic and clinical data will need to be collected from patient charts and entered into the database or retrieved for clinical research studies.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Four-year college degree with substantial Biology and laboratory coursework desired.Some wet lab experience highly preferred.Facility with PC word processing and database software.Basic knowledge of anatomy and ability to work with human tissues.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):In addition to the requirements of the Laboratory Assistant II, this position requires at least an additional year of experience in laboratory-related work a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

In addition to qualifications listed for the Laboratory Assistant II level, these employees must be able to coordinate and organize a variety of duties within general guidelines; they must be thoroughly familiar with various needs of a laboratory. Must be able to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical, and support staff and/or students.Ability to train and/or lead employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machinesOccasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.Additional and/or Unusual WORKING CONDITIONS:May be required to drive to off-campus hospital locations.WORK STANDARDS:

The expected pay range for this position is $33.63 (Step 1) to $40.55 (Step 10) per hour.
