Job Description:

The International Regional Development Director for Advancement is responsible for strategically managing a portfolio of approximately 150-200 principal and major gift prospects and donors aligned within a specific geographic territory who can make gifts of $500,000 - $5,000,000 to the University. In this specific position, regions covered in the portfolio include India, Singapore, the Middle East, Greece, Turkey, and related London diaspora. This might change over time.

The International Regional Development Director is expected to raise a minimum of $5-10M from their portfolio.

The primary responsibilities of the International Regional Development Director involve effective prospect and donor relationship management of high-level alumni, parents, and friends, including field qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. An emphasis on the development of solicitation strategies and closure of major and principal gifts aligned with University campaigns and major fundraising priorities is a requirement of the position as measured against the attainment of personal and regional annual fundraising goals. Other responsibilities include effective collaboration and partnership with colleagues, peers, and fundraising unit managers within a diverse number and variety of fundraising programs; planning and managing regional events; staffing University administrators and faculty on development visits with prospects and donors; and recording activities, contacts, proposals and strategic plans in the donor database.

The International Regional Development Director works closely with academic leaders related to the relevant area studies and with senior University Administrators. The International Regional Development Director has an interest in global affairs and geopolitics and can confidently interact with Brown alumni, parents, and friends from around the world, showing an interest in their countries and cultures.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Advancement or a related field such as development, nonprofit, higher education, sales, customer relations, volunteer management, etc.


Required Qualifications
  • Superior interpersonal skills with proven ability to successfully interact and collaborate with varied constituencies in a professional manner, exhibiting excellent written and oral communication skills, team-building skills, and demonstrating tact, poise, and diplomacy while working with a wide variety of personalities. Ability and comfort in meeting and interacting with individuals of considerable social status and affluence.
  • Proven ability to solicit and close philanthropic gifts on the six-figure+ level (preferably at the seven-figure level), or equivalent experience in a related field such as sales.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to initiate, collaborate, implement, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans that support the activities of the program and contribute to the overall goals and objectives of Advancement and the fundraising enterprise.
  • Working knowledge of email and calendars, the Windows environment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and other software such as Adobe Acrobat, donor databases, etc.
  • Must be able and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able and willing to travel internationally to attend relevant programs and events and to meet with current and prospective donors and leadership volunteers to further cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • A valid passport is required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience with major gift fundraising in a capital campaign, high-level volunteer management, and knowledge of Brown University
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit setting
  • Interest in global affairs, understanding of international geopolitics and matters, and/or experience living or working internationally.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment is essential.
