Description
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible position as Instructional Professor (open-rank) of Computational Linguistics starting on September 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed as Assistant, Associate, or Full Instructional Professor depending on qualifications and experience. The initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, renewable upon successful review, with longer initial terms possible based on qualifications, experience, and the rank offered to the selected candidate.
Responsibilities will include teaching 5-6 courses in computational linguistics per academic year on the quarter system. Possible course offerings will include an Introduction to Computational Methods in Linguistics, an Introduction to Quantitative Analysis in Linguistics, and focused courses on the use of particular computational tools for different types of linguistic analysis. Service responsibilities may include advising student thesis projects, organizing co-curricular activities and events related to computational linguistics, and offering independent studies in advanced topics in computational linguistics as needed. The course assignment may be adjusted in future years if service responsibilities increase as a result of the launch of a planned Minor in Computational Linguistics. Instructional Professors of all ranks are expected to engage in regular professional development.
Salary Range or Pay Grade:
Assistant Instructional Professor: $82,000 - $104,999; Associate Instructional Professor: $105,000 - $124,999; Instructional Professor: $125,000 - $150,000. This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have at least a MA/MS or PhD in Linguistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, or a related field, and experience teaching at the university or post-secondary level.
Experience in program development and/or coordination preferred.
