Are you an experienced and compassionate Chemo RN ready to take your oncology nursing career to the next level? We are seeking a dedicated professional to join our dynamic inpatient oncology unit as an Inpatient Oncology Expert and Mentor. In this pivotal role, you will administer chemotherapy with precision and care, educate patients and their families on complex treatment plans, and be a source of strength and guidance for both patients and new staff members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Chemotherapy Administration:
    • Deliver chemotherapy treatments with meticulous attention to detail, adhering to established protocols and safety guidelines.
    • Monitor patients for adverse reactions, intervene as necessary, and provide ongoing assessment throughout treatment.
  • Patient and Family Education:
    • Serve as a key educator for patients and their families, ensuring they understand their diagnosis, treatment plan, and what to expect during the course of care.
    • Empower patients and families by providing clear instructions on managing side effects and maintaining well-being during treatment.
  • Mentorship and Staff Support:
    • Act as a mentor to new oncology nurses, providing guidance, support, and encouragement as they develop their skills and confidence.
    • Lead by example, promoting a culture of continuous learning, empathy, and excellence in patient care.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the multidisciplinary oncology team, including physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and dietitians, to ensure comprehensive care for all patients.
    • Participate in team meetings, contributing valuable insights to develop personalized treatment plans and improve patient outcomes.
  • Patient Advocacy:
    • Advocate for the needs and preferences of oncology patients, ensuring that each individual receives care that is not only effective but also compassionate and respectful of their unique situation.
  • Clinical Excellence:
    • Stay current with the latest advancements in oncology nursing and chemotherapy protocols, integrating evidence-based practices into daily patient care.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the unit by participating in quality improvement initiatives and sharing knowledge with colleagues.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support:
    • Provide emotional support to patients and families, helping them navigate the challenges of cancer treatment with dignity and hope.
    • Recognize the importance of self-care and resilience in nursing, modeling these practices for both patients and team members.

    Education Required
    • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required
    Experience Required
    • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in administering chemotherapy.
    • Certifications: Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred (required within 2 years); Chemotherapy Certification required.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
    • General computer skills are required, including proficiency in managing multiple databases including Microsoft Excel.
    • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is highly desired
    • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable
    • Skills: Strong clinical skills in oncology nursing, excellent communication and teaching abilities, and a genuine passion for mentoring and leadership.
