Position Description
Performs advanced, specialized work in the planning, conducting, and/or supervising of original research at TTUHSC. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

Major/Essential Functions
- Conducts original research/behavioral work either alone or in collaboration with other team members.
- Plans, schedules and coordinates procedures in design, research/behavioral work, surveys and investigations and assumes responsibility for acceptance or rejection of the results achieved.
- May supervise/assist in trouble shooting problems with equipment or research design with team members, preparation of research/behavioral apparatus, questionnaires, data, research subjects or other research instruments.
- Participates in submitting abstracts and publications to scientific groups/conferences/meetings/ publishers.
- Performs related work as required to include isolation of cells from human brains/bloods, initiation and maintenance of cerebral cortical cultures; and primary neurons from mice.
- Keep records of experiments and tissue retrieval/storage, which includes recording of actual procedures and results of the experiments and the storage location.
- Runs data obtained in experiments through computer for analysis to present to leadership/team members.
- Coordinates and maintains human genetic samples and database/records for FRONTIER, GIA/GIA Brain Bank and TTUHSC Neurology department. Coordination with the Department of Neurology staff, field coordinators and SW GIA members are required for these research projects. Oversees behavioral studies that include 3 different strands of mice (which are over 1000 mice), oversees the breeding, weening, tattooing, genotyping, surgeries, tissue retrieval, tissue banking, tissue data recording of each of these mice.
- Perform specialized lab assays and use specialized lab equipment for research. This includes but not limited to use of the electron microscope, maintain Htt, N2a and SyS-S5Y cells for lab use, immunoblot, immunofluorescence stain, mitochondrial function assay and tattooing of behavioral animals.
- Develops/submits/updates animal protocols and amendments as needed/required.
- Will train and mentor team members on procedures and protocols of the GIA laboratory as needed/required, along with training of the GIA Brain Bank staff.
- Observes work and safety rules. Responsibility also includes ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment to maintain compliance with TTUHSC Safety Services. Addresses any safety infractions as needed.
