Job Description:
JOB DUTIES: The North Platte Fish Hatchery is a cool/warm water facility with one onsite manager position. This position will deal with intensive and extensive cool/warm water culture of multiple species. Plan, schedule, coordinate and carry out the annual production and distribution of assigned fish species and evaluate and report results of innovative fish production techniques aimed at increasing production efficiency will be large portions of the job duties. Planning, managing, and engaging in the collection of brood stock, spawning, and hatching of the fish scheduled for production at the hatchery is also pertinent to this position. The manager will also conduct routine fish health and nutrition assessments, diagnose and treat fish diseases, monitor water quality, and control aquatic vegetation. This position will plan, direct, and supervise all on-site staff as well as conduct maintenance for hatchery equipment, vehicles, buildings, grounds and ponds. Duties include preparing and maintaining administrative records and reports pertaining to budgets, expenses, vehicle logs, invoices, propagation activities, stocking reports, pollution control monitoring, personnel reports and others related to fish production. The manager will also participate in public relations work through hatchery tours and answering questions of visitors, and presenting technical reports to professionals, organizations and the general public regarding all aspects of hatchery management and fish production.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training with major coursework in fish or wildlife management or a closely related field of biological science plus two years' experience in fish or wildlife resource management, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years' experience in fish culture. Incumbent must acquire an aquatic pesticide applicator's license within the first year of hire.

Other: Driver's license required.

Note: State housing is required and provided for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Principles and practices of fish and aquatic biology, particularly fish culture; fish disease and pollution problems; research methods and techniques used in the field; statistical data analysis; computer spreadsheets and data basing; equipment techniques used to capture, census, age, sex and mark various fish species; habitat and history of fish species; fish and wildlife conservation programs; knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to fish and wildlife. Ability to assemble, organize and process data by recognized scientific techniques; evaluate and analyze fish hatchery management plans and develop recommendations for improvement; communicate complex fisheries and aquatic concepts to diverse user groups; supervise the work of others; operate various vehicles, power tools, electrical instruments, scientific equipment and sampling gear; deal effectively with the public. Perform other related duties as required.
