Description
The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) is a unique interdisciplinary school launched by the University of Chicago in 2011 with the aim of translating molecular and quantum science into technological solutions with societal impact in health and immunology, energy/water/materials, environmental sustainability, and information processing. PME is also closely affiliated with Argonne National Laboratory, and joint appointment is encouraged when appropriate.
The University of Chicago's Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth (ICSG) is a groundbreaking effort uniting faculty from across the university to advance society's understanding of our energy and climate future. The Institute combines faculty insights in energy markets and policy, climate systems engineering, and energy technology to produce world-changing ideas while also investing in the next generation of energy and climate thinkers, leaders, and innovators through novel educational programs.
The University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth seek applicants for multiple open rank - tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate or full professor - appointments at the intersection of artificial intelligence/computation, materials and energy. Tenure lines will be housed within the PME, or jointly between PME and another unit. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to secure an affiliation with the UChicago Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth and the Data Science Institute (DSI). The hire is part of university wide multi-disciplinary strategic initiatives in the areas of climate and sustainable growth, AI and data science, and materials for energy and sustainability.
Successful candidates' primary research focus is expected to be computational and theoretical in nature, and one that combines AI and science-based approaches across a variety of disciplines, although applicants possessing experimental components to their research program will be considered. The PME is a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that promotes deep interaction opportunities between theoretical/computational and experimental research groups.
Candidates with interest in topics that span across the stack--from materials to systems and their integration -are encouraged to apply. Topics may include, but are not restricted to: AI emulators and foundational models for physical systems relevant to energy; quantum and classical simulations of material and molecular properties; battery and electrochemical science & engineering; processes, systems and economic mechanisms leading to energy efficient performance and green manufacturing; statistical/machine learning/econometric methods for assessing the impact of new technologies; energy efficient information processing (including bio-inspired, classical, quantum and sensor network based); machine learning methods for solving analyzing integrative models; and carbon conversion and related technologies.
Qualifications
Before the start of employment, qualified applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field of study and have a strong record of independent research. Candidates for Associate or Full Professor must have evidence of leadership in their field and an outstanding track record of independent research, allowing them to qualify for appointment as a tenured professor in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (or jointly with another department in the University). All successful candidates will be expected to establish and maintain a robust research program and teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
