The Role

This position supports Department E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering. The specific area of responsibility for this position is for the Component Fabrication & Assembly (CFA) group. The E86 CFA group is responsible for providing engineering support to all shop activities involved in the fabrication, construction and testing of new construction CVN 78 Class Carrier for propulsion plant mechanical systems directly supporting CFA Shops. CFA Shops included the following areas: Nuclear, Detail, and Assembly Pipe Shops, Main Machine Shop, Sheet Metal Shop, Hanger Shop, Pad Shop/Sail Loft, Reactor Storeroom, and Foundry.

Typical duties in this role include the following:

1. Provides on-site and hands-on engineering support for various CFA Shops.
2. Problem solving of shop fabrication issues on CVN 78 Class Carrier propulsion plant mechanical systems.
3. Develop technical work documents such as Carrier Construction Propulsion Procedures (CCPP's) and electronic Inspection Reports (eIR's).
4. Review and interpret construction drawings and Visual Work Instructions (VWI's) for shop fabrication of propulsion plant mechanical systems.
5. Collaborating with other Engineers, Construction Management and Craftsmen on a daily basis.

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues, which arise during new construction of CVN 78 Class Carriers. Good communication and interpersonal skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel. In addition, be willing to provide hands-on or on the job site engineering support.
