Position Purpose:

To collaborate with and independently support faculty with all stages of qualitative and quantitative research related to economics and economic policy, including (i) programming to construct and validate data, undertake descriptive and econometric analyses, and estimate economic models; and (ii) communication of qualitative and quantitative research in writing, including internal write-ups as well as assistance drafting and editing papers for publication.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Previous programming experience (in languages such as R, Matlab, Python, or Stata), as gained through past coursework, past independent research, past work experience, or past research experience,
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm in applying programming experience to economic research and economic policy work,
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently,
  • Attention to detail,
  • Excellent problem-solving skills,
  • Creativity,
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • A long-term interest in pursuing research related to economics and economic policy,
  • For a subset of projects whose work blends qualitative and quantitative research, the ideal candidate should not only have skills and interest in constructing and analyzing data but also in undertaking qualitative, institutional, and historical work needed to interpret the data in context,
  • For a subset of projects whose work is more technically oriented, the ideal candidate should have a strong mathematical background (including multivariate calculus and linear algebra, with knowledge of higher-level math coursework such as graph theory and differential equations),
  • An interest in pursuing a PhD in Economics.

Data Construction and Analysis

  • Write data scripts to read in, clean, and analyze datasets including large and sometimes raw or unstructured files
  • Undertake analysis, trial-and-error, and cross-validation to ensure consistency and quality in data construction

  • Prepare appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, and summary statistics

Econometrics and Statistical Inference

  • Undertake descriptive and econometric data analyses
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and propose potential solutions to problems that arise in the process of data analysis

Description:

Communication of research

  • Conduct literature reviews and background research for grant proposals and academic papers Summarize data analyses in writing for grant proposals and academic papers
  • Generate detailed documentation and open-access code that other researchers can use to replicate, update, and extend data construction and analysis
  • Assist with drafting and editing papers for publication

Coordination

  • Assist with management of research team, including mentorship of undergraduate students
  • Track and report on project tasks and progress
  • Coordinate and provide feedback to undergraduate research assistants
