The Radiology Department intends to hire for two position at either the Nuclear Medicine Technologist & PET classification or Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist & PET, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Radiology is seeking a Nuclear Medicine Technologist to work in Nuclear Medicine and PET, performing a variety of complex Nuclear Medicine / Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging and laboratory procedures that require independent judgment and initiative to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing or treating patient illness.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement and evaluate technology required for new procedures and new imaging areas; provide instruction to medical staff, technology staff, students and other staff; follow established radiation protection guidelines and develop guidelines for new imaging procedures and imaging areas.
  • Perform duties of Staff Nuclear Medicine and PET Technologist as required and assigned.
  • Evaluate equipment performance, recognize image artifacts, and initiate corrective action, when needed.
  • Develop quality assurance testing parameters for specialized instrumentation.
  • Supervise students in specialized imaging areas and in performance of new procedures.
  • Coordinate planning and scheduling of diagnostic procedures and imaging areas.
  • Requisition and inventory supplies for imaging areas and procedures.
  • Consult with attending physicians to improve quality of procedures.
  • Interact professionally with patient/family. Provide liaison between medical staff and patients, patients' families, and hospital staff.
Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received from the Chief Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist or other designated official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.

Will require some additional call, on weekends, holidays, and evenings. May require some hours outside the routine week for clinical research.

The Department of Radiology will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist & PET classification salary is 5, and the Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist & PET classification salary is 6. Experience Requirements
Nuclear Medicine Technologist (PET):
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology approved by the Council of Education of the American Medical Association or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist (PET):
  • A Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Technology or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Reasonable (1-3 years) of progressively responsible experience in dedicated positron emission tomography (PET) procedures and related computer applications are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex PET examinations.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and implement new projects in PET that advance new clinical applications or research endeavors.
Certification Requirements

Nuclear Medicine Technologist (PET):
  • Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board in nuclear medicine is required.
  • Certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist by the Iowa Public Health Department as documented by an Iowa Permit to Practice (IPP) is required.
Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist (PET):
  • Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in nuclear medicine is required.
  • Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in PET.
  • Certification as a Nuclear Medical Technologist by the Iowa Public Health Department as documented by an Iowa Permit to Practice (IPP) is required.
Desired Qualification

Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist (PET):
  • PET research experience.
  • Strong organizational skills.
