Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The College of Arts & Sciences, administered by the Dean, consists of seventy-one academic departments, curricula, programs, centers, and Institutes. The College is divided into multiple divisions, which are overseen by Senior Associate Deans. All academic departments and curricula are assigned to one of the following three divisions Fine Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and Social Sciences & Global Programs. A fourth division, Undergraduate Education, houses curriculum and instructional innovation, honors and distinguished scholarships, and student academic support. These Senior Associate Deans, along with the Senior Associate Deans for Operations and Strategy, Research and Innovation, Development, and the Director of Communications for the College, all report to the Dean.

During its 200+ year history, the College has grown and thrived and employs nearly 1,000 faculty, over 600 staff, and more than 3,000 student employees, and provides instruction for more than 16,600 undergraduate and nearly 2,400 graduate students with annual expenditures of $345M. Sixty percent of student credit hours are taught by the College. The College has 13,316 undergraduate majors and 2,392 graduate majors from more than 40 academic majors.

The College's Business Operations, led by the Senior Associate Dean for Operations and Strategy, comprise of nearly 70 staff and include the divisions of Finance and Budget Management, Human Resources, Information Technology and Data Analytics, Facilities, and Dean's Office administration.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Divisional Finance Director serves as the senior financial leader for one of the five divisions in the College of Arts & Sciences. This position serves as the primary financial advisor to the division's Senior Associate Dean as well as departments and units in the division. The Director will manage all aspects of finance and accounting for the division, supervise shared services staff supporting units in the division, review budgets and fund usage for compliance, conduct and present analyses to department and school leadership, manage financial projects and programs for the division and College, monitor divisional units' financial health, and be a key resource for developing financial strategies.

This position requires an expert-level subject knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices to serve as the financial subject-matter expert for the division. The Director must also have a collaborative and team-oriented approach to ensure consistency with other Divisional Finance Directors to maintain equity in the College's financial management.

The position reports to the Associate Dean for Finance and Budget Management for the College and collaborates closely with the Senior Financial Director, working under the guidance of both leaders.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Mid- to late-career with Masters and 2- 4 yrs experience; Bachelors and 3-5 yrs experience

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Demonstrated analytical skills including ability to analyze large volumes of data, solve problems, find efficient ways to complete tasks, and make decisions.
- Ability to understand relationships between numbers, analyze trends, and work with graphical and/or Excel dashboards or other tools to create financial projections, metrics, costing standards and other relevant information for campus customers.
- Ability to prepare and interpret financial, academic and operational information to evaluate performance and to support strategic business decisions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Advanced Excel and ERP systems knowledge.
- Minimum of five years of progressive budget and/or accounting experience in a university setting.
- Business process improvement experience.
- Financial and reporting experience in a higher education environment.
- Master's degree in a relevant field.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:

The job is primarily office-based and requires sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or conducting meetings. The ability to read and analyze financial data, as well as operate a computer and other office equipment is required.
