Job Summary
The Director, Annual Giving is a member of the Individual Giving Team within the Medicine and Biological Sciences Development (MBSD) team. This position is responsible for advising and developing the strategic direction for annual giving programs in support of University of Chicago Medicine, Pritzker School of Medicine, and the Division of the Biological Sciences.

They plan, organize, and direct a high-quality annual giving program to support University priorities and programs utilizing direct mail, email, giving day, and other digital initiatives to reach out to alumni and friends. Analyzes annual giving efforts and develops strategies to achieve optimal results. The Director works with internal and UChicago Medicine partners to maintain HIPAA compliance and the Marketing and Communications Team in planning and executing multi-channel strategies. The Director supervises the Assistant Director of Annual Giving.

The Director will work collaboratively with members of the Individual Giving team, Marketing and Communications, and Research & Analytics to design and implement multi-channel strategies to attract and retain annual giving donors.

As directed by the Senior Director, they represent the team in departmental and cross departmental meetings to present priorities and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes long-term and annual strategic plans to secure annual support from alumni and friends of the University of Chicago Medicine, Pritzker School of Medicine, and the Division of the Biological Sciences. Manages staff, implements project management tools and techniques, coordinates efforts across MBSD, and evaluates work product and productivity, to meet deadlines and expectations for quality, style, and brand consistency.
  • Responsible for creating donor solicitation materials including drafting solicitation appeals; working with Marketing and Communications and vendors on design elements; determining segmentation and variable content; creating a process to attract and retain new donors, retain and upgrade current donors, and recognize loyal donors. Develop a content library of stewardship communications to convey the impact and importance of annual giving.
  • Develops a process for the solicitation of non-alumni prospects and donors maintaining HIPAA compliance standards and effectively uses market research to analyze donor behavior, acquisition rates, and segment audiences.
  • Work closely with the Strategic Research & Analysis team on technology solutions, data management, and market segmentation strategies.
  • Drives and manages the research, analysis, planning, implementation, execution and measuring of activities related to acquiring, cultivating, and stewarding annual giving donors. Channels for execution include but are not limited to: Direct mail appeals; Digital fundraising; Website coordination; Video storytelling; Social media collaboration on appeals and initiatives.
  • Oversees the Annual Giving program and the work of the Assistant Director of Annual Giving to raise unrestricted and renewable restricted contributions to the University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences.
  • Assists the Senior Director in Annual Business Planning; monitoring and managing the Annual Fiscal Year Budget; identifying agendas and outcomes for regular team and sub-team meetings; and upholding our HR Best Practices.
  • Envisions, designs, and implements a plan to ensure our annual giving outreach tools and products are current and available to support fundraising campaigns and initiatives.
  • Provides expertise to the development of plans to solicit prospective donors and meet campaign goals. This includes speaking to new prospects persuasively about the case for annual giving support.
  • Ensures quality control when monitoring various marketing channels by developing a targeted strategy for solicitation and marketing materials as well as campaign appeals, solving a range of complex problems as they arise.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in not-for-profit management, public relations, marketing, advertising, or business management.

Experience:
  • A minimum of seven-years experience in development or a related service-oriented field.
  • At least two years of demonstrated strategic planning, budget management, and staff management experience.
  • Development experience and experience using CRM.
  • Work experience in private higher education or academic medicine.
  • Experience working within a complex and hierarchical organization.

  • An understanding of the University of Chicago, its history, mission, demographics, faculty, current programs, departments, and processes.
