Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Adams School of Dentistry, established in 1950 and made possible by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, the School is now part of a dynamic Health Science campus including the UNC-CH School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Gillings School of Public Health, and School of Social Work. The School provides oral health care to more than 90,000 patients each year and provides additional in-kind services total more than $3.6M annually through four student-led free dental clinics and other charitable care events. With more than 6,400 living alumni in 27 nations and all 50 states, the School's impact to oral health in North Carolina, throughout the U.S., and around the world is unprecedented. Adams School of Dentistry is at the forefront of oral health care, education, research and leadership. We lead the way in oral health care and education with compassion and sensitivity, and we are committed to caring for rural and underserved populations across North Carolina and beyond.The Development team raises philanthropic funds to support the School's work of teaching, research, service and developing the next generation of oral health care providers. The Development team works with faculty and staff to identify individuals, corporations, foundations, and other funders interested in supporting existing and emerging programs and projects.The advancement team at UNC Adams School of Dentistry, the Dental Foundation of North Carolina (DFNC) awards more than $4 million dollars annually in scholarships, fellowships, and faculty professorships and awards, program support and facility updates, including the private funding campaign that helped make Koury Oral Health Sciences Building possible. In total, the 501©(3) charitable not-for-profit organization holds nearly $130 million in private assets that are managed by its Board of Directors, comprising Adams School of Dentistry alumni and friends.

Position Summary:

The Associate Dean for Advancement serves as the chief development officer for the Adams School of Dentistry and has primary responsibility for all of the School's fundraising activities. This position manages and executes a comprehensive development program for the School, with responsibility for working with the Dean and UDO Liaison to set and meet fundraising goals. As the chief fundraiser for the School, this position will maintain a select portfolio of key donors in the six- and seven-figure level and above; support the dean on top prospects for the School, solicit and secure individual, corporate, and foundation gifts; and set and meet individual fundraising activity metrics typical of a university fundraiser. The position manages the School's development and alumni affairs team, is responsible for developing and implementing campaign strategies for the School; establishes and oversees a comprehensive Annual Fund campaign, and ensures that new prospective donors are identified and engaged on a continuous basis. Together with the team, this position interacts closely with the dean, faculty, and staff to secure private grant and philanthropic support. This position oversees the administrative and operating plans for the School's development office, including supervising a staff of three and ensuring the School is in compliance with records management requirements and other guidelines of the UNC-Chapel Hill University Development Office (UDO).

The Associate Dean reports to the Dean and serves the school in the following capacities: support the strategic needs of the School as an active member of the Dean's Leadership Team. Serve as the Executive Director of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, actively building financially and programmatically supportive relationships with Foundation Board members and managing Board membership. The Associate Dean works closely with the School's assigned Liaison in the University Development Office, currently the Executive Director of Development for Schools and Units, and serves the university-wide development program in the following capacities: maintains team members' accountability to fundraising metrics consistent with university practice, serves as a member of the Constituent Units Council with their peers, ensures that university-wide development guidelines and policies are followed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience in the field of development, with a demonstrated record of accomplishments with respect to major gifts and corporate and foundation fundraising, and a demonstrated ability to launch and manage new comprehensive fund-raising programs working independently and with volunteers. Requires exceptional communications skills, along with ability to work efficiently on multiple projects. The incumbent should understand goal-setting, apply metrics, and think strategically. Demonstrating a deep care for and knowledge of North Carolina, the incumbent should have the ability to identify with the School's unique mission and be willing and able to demonstrate its mission and values. The position requires frequent travel in the State of North Carolina and occasional travel in the other U.S. states, as well as occasional evening and weekend events.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

A familiarity with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the State of North Carolina will be valued highly. Preference for candidates that have the ability to understand the School's oral care and oral medicine donor base, targeting both businesses and individuals in fundraising efforts, and be comfortable networking accordingly. Experience and/or interest in development efforts that support endeavors similar to the School's are valued.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
