POSITION SUMMARY: The Department of Politics at Ithaca College invites applications for a tenure-track position in U.S. Politics at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Fall 2025. The department seeks candidates whose primary methodological orientation is qualitative, with expertise in critical, historical, and/or ethnographic methods.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will normally teach a 3/2 annual undergraduate course load in the broad area of U.S. politics at the introductory, intermediate, and upper levels, including one intermediate-level course on Constitutional Law. The ability to teach a course on U.S. Foreign Policy is welcomed.

The selected candidate will be expected to maintain an active scholarship program and will be expected to participate in service to the department, school, college, profession, and/or the off- campus community.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in political science; ABD candidates who will have defended by August 1, 2025, are encouraged to apply. College teaching experience and a commitment to undergraduate teaching are also required. We prefer candidates who share our commitment to critical thinking, writing, and discussion. The ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment is expected.

ON THE POLITICS DEPARTMENT: The Politics Department comprises a dynamic community of educators, researchers, staff, and students, each with various expertise. We have over 80 politics majors and minors. Our small discussion-based classes (10-30 students) promote close student-teacher interaction, often leading to intense dialogue and close collaboration with faculty working at the cutting edge of their fields. Students can share ideas and debate them with their classmates and professors inside and outside the classroom. Our interdisciplinary, transnational, and cross-cultural curriculum is designed to be flexible, and it includes nontraditional coursework that emphasizes analysis of the relationships of power.

Faculty research interests currently range from memory in South Africa to people experiencing homelessness in U.S. cities and rural areas; from democracy assistance in the Balkans to the role of unions in U.S. political party strategies; from the connection between militarism and gender to the effects of the "war on terror" on upstate New York; from the deportation of undocumented workers from New York City to the question of tolerance in liberal democracies. Faculty members have published widely and are regularly present at major national and international conferences. These research experiences inform the faculty's teaching practice, as shown by the types of courses offered, methods of instruction, and interdisciplinary approach to politics and public policy.

The Politics program prepares students for careers in public service, foreign relations, NGOs, international organizations, international business, and graduate and professional school. Students are well prepared to enter law school or graduate programs in various disciplines, such as the environment, human rights, international and global affairs, public policy, journalism, community organizing, and business.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS: Interested individuals should apply online at http://Ithaca.edu/jobs and attach a cover letter (500 words), curriculum vitae (CV), teaching statement (500 words), scholarship statement (500 words), a representative course syllabus, and a list containing the contact information for three professional references.

The cover letter should discuss the candidate's interest in working at Ithaca College and how the candidate's undergraduate teaching experience, scholarly interests, and service experience relate to the position description provided. The scholarship statement should describe the applicant's substantive research project and the future direction of the broader scholarship.

The teaching statement should articulate the applicant's teaching philosophy and discuss the candidate's teaching experience to date.

The search committee will request three (3) letters of recommendation, one writing sample (20 - 30 pages), and sample teaching materials from applicants who progress to the semi-finalist stage of the hiring process.
