Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

The Department of Administration of Justice in the School of Public Affairs seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position. The 9-month tenure track position seeks candidates with abilities to thrive in a growing department that offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Candidates with teaching experience/expertise in social science statistics and methodology highly encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service. This position requires responsibilities for functions related to teaching administration of justice courses; advising students; serving on dissertation committees; engaging in scholarly activities in areas relevant to the department; and assuming departmental and college committee responsibilities as assigned to advance the mission and goals of the university, the school, and the department.

Candidates are required to direct graduate and undergraduate student research. In addition, successful candidates must demonstrate the potential for success in developing funded programs for the improvement of research and student learning. The position involves teaching 12 hours a semester with a lighter load for graduate teaching and thesis advising, conducting research, and advising undergraduate and graduate students. Current faculty members are active in theoretical and interdisciplinary research collaboration with other colleges at the university and outside entities.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in scholarly research and teaching. Applicants should have a proven track record of exceptional scholarship as well as of institution building and service. Responsibilities include conducting rigorous academic research and teaching/developing core and elective courses in the administration of justice and related areas of expertise. The search will continue until the position is filled.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in administration of justice or related fields as assigned.
  • Advise and mentor students majoring or minoring in administration of justice and supervise master's thesis and/or doctoral dissertation.
  • Teach master's and doctoral level statistics and research methods.
  • Pursue an active research agenda in administration of justice. Seek extramural funding opportunities.
  • Develop partnerships with scholars and practitioners, and agencies in administration of justice; active participation in departmental, school and university committees; service to one's profession and the surrounding community; and other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range:

Commensurate with experience.

Education:

An earned Ph.D. degree from an accredited college/university in Criminology; Criminal Justice; Administration of Justice is required. An earned J.D. degree is insufficient for this appointment, even with teaching and administration experience in criminal justice.

Required Licensing/Certification:

Not Generally Required, but Required of All Candidates Who Have Not Been Awarded a Ph.D.Special consideration for ability to teach research methods and statistics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures and practices.
  • A documented history of sound academic and workplace/laboratory judgment/decision making/problem solving skills is highly desirable.
  • A documented history of pedagogic efficiency is highly desirable, e.g., teaching evaluations, peer reviews, or reviews by supervisors.
  • Current software used in teaching, research and presentation.
Skill in:
  • Detail oriented.
  • Effective customer service.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Multitasking and time management.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication.
  • Successfully teach courses in various medium (traditional, online and hybrid) as per department's requirements.
Ability to:
  • A demonstrated commitment towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
  • Hold office hours for students to mentor and advise on class requirements.
  • Participate in department/school and university activities requiring faculty presence.
  • Maintain involvement in appropriate professional organizations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required by the department.
Work Experience:

  • Active Research agenda as evidenced by at least one journal publication at time of hire.
  • The writing of and securing of research grants is desirable.
Working/Environmental Conditions:

  • Prolonged standing and/or walking.
  • Handling light weight objects.
  • Using or carrying equipment.
