Department Summary

The Department of Geography & the Environment is a community of 17 faculty members, 75 graduate students, and over 300 undergraduate students. The department offers a PhD in geography, MA and MS degrees in geography and geographic information science (including an online MSGISc program), and undergraduate degrees in geography, environmental science, and geographic information science. In all areas of teaching, research, scholarship and service, the department is committed to the University's vision of "a great private university dedicated to the public good." Position Summary

The Department of Geography & the Environment department in the Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics is accepting expressions of interest for adjunct and faculty overload positions to teach a variety of course in the 2024-2025 academic year. This posting will be utilized to seek applicants for teaching both adjunct and faculty overload positions. This posting will serve for multiple openings in departmental offerings to the common curriculum or required/elective courses for our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Adjunct faculty are required to teach twice a week, hold office hours, assign papers and exams as appropriate and be available to assist students with assignments. The University operates on a quarter system. The Fall 2024 quarter is from September 9, 2024, through November 21, 2024. The Winter 2025 quarter is from January 6, 2025, through March 21, 2025. The Spring 2025 quarter is from March 31, 2025, through June 12, 2025. Adjunct faculty positions are non-benefited positions.

Details of teaching responsibilities will be provided by the department at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to deliver courses in person or online for certain courses.
  • Flexibility to pivot between teaching modalities on short notice.
  • Familiarity with Canvas LMS is preferred.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for submission of course grades is essential.
  • Ability to provide feedback to students regarding their progress in courses in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to lecture continuously for up to two hours at a time.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Ability to teach at the university level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in related field
  • College-level teaching experience.

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Course Rate

The course rate for this position is $4,854 - $6,068 per course.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
